Who among us doesn't feel a sense of foreboding at tax time? For many the mere mention of the word tax sends a shiver - and not a nice one - down the spine.

Perhaps that's why the ATO's home page seems a colourful affair, not at all like a green government form full of sensible but restrained-looking headings to help you find what you need so you can do what must be done.
Apparently, half a million Aussies do their tax online. So, from July 1, you'll be able to join them by downloading a new, enhanced version of e-tax software.

"If you want your refund quickly, e-tax is the perfect option for you," yells the site, promising that most returns are processed within 14 days.

The site is comprehensive, and is clearly set out in recogniton of the fact that, for example, tax professionals have different requirements than the rest of us.
